Self-Reflection (Final Post).

I felt that on completion of this assignment it is important to reflect on how I have thought the assignment has progressed. Prior to writing my proposal I was uncertain of which direction to explore; the original idea was interested in advertising; however not being entirely sure with the direction that I intended for the work to progress, I decided it would be more beneficial to rethink my ideas — and I have not regretted this decision. I have explored landscape with different ideas and processes, arriving at a high quality, well executed body of photographic work which I can easily explain. The use of image and text has begun the process whereby I can begin to try and express myself in a ways which I, and hopefully others can also understand or relate to.
Furthermore my printing and paper handling has developed significantly, as a result my confidence has increased, I feel indepedent, empowered and in complete control in the printing and paper handling of my photographs, which is a wonderful feeling and experience.
I am pleased with the professional development which has been made on this assignment. However my development is not limited only to university, but the skills and knowledge I am aquiring as well as the photographic series that I am producing can be applied within a professional environment as well as the skills can be built upon in my independent time. I have learnt how prepare photographs for exhibition, when they are framed you need to attach mirror plates to the frames; once this is complete you can begin to measure the space where you intend to hang the photographs. Using a spirit level (which I haven’t before) you accurately ensure that the images will be hanging accurately and straight upon the wall. I am pleased with my knowledge and practical development, here are some examples of my work now …

The exhibition is now hung on the wall and awaiting the opening night this Friday. I cannot wait, it is easy to see that many people have tried extremely hard with their photographic projects and this is reflected in their work which is upon the wall.

STEPHANIE MURTON

BREAKTHROUGH

Using photography as a therapeutic tool is often considered to have benefits such as encouraging personal growth, development and the understanding of emotions. Alongside this, the potential to develop an appreciation of the beauty of the world which we inhibit.

Stephanie Murton has pursued this approach within the solitude and seclusion of natural landscapes; using the camera as a therapeutic tool to explore emotions which are both difficult to communicate and understand from the perspective of an individual with autism. In the accompanying photo book, there are additional photographs from the Breakthrough series, with poetry which aims to offer further context into her own perception of life.

Hanging the photography for the Novus exhibition

Hanging the photography for the Novus exhibition

Although it is slightly difficult to see the photographs due to the reflections, my imagery is now mounted onto the wall space for the opening night of the Novus Photography exhibition on Friday 5th May.

I have learnt a great deal about what is required to prepare and complete an exhibition. I am thoroughly proud of how the work has come together.

Collecting the photographs from the framers

I collected the photographs from the framers this afternoon ahead of hanging the imagery tomorrow for the exhibition, I photographed three of the five images which I am aiming to display to highlight the quality and that it is to a good standard and it’s really satisfying and empowering to view your photography in print, a physical encounter, rather than on a digital screen. Digitally viewing photographs really does not evoke a response as much as seeing the print framed does.

Preparing the exhibition space

To ensure that the exhibition area was prepared equally and efficiently, we were designated an exhibition space which we were to prepare as if it was our own; this was an enjoyable challenge as we were in charge of sanding the walls, filling in any uneven surfaces and painting the walls.

Everyone helped each other and collectively we had done the job to a good standard; on completion of preparing the exhibition space, I helped to clean up by brushing up the dust and dirt which had accumulated from the sanding process. It was good to get involved in the team to ensure that everything got completed and no one was singularly burdened with multiple tasks. This experience has enlightened me to understand what you would be required to do if you set up an exhibition in the future, from this experience today I definitely feel confident in either independently or collaboratively preparing an area for exhibition.

I am really looking forward to collecting my photographs tomorrow and hanging the photographs, photo book and business cards on Friday, the exhibition is really coming together nicely and it is really rewarding to feel that the hard work is in fact paying off.

Framing – What Decision?

What framing style did I decide to choose?

I visited a local framers this morning; after viewing their extensive collection of framing samples, the decision was made to pursue my original intention, which was to select a black frame.

Furthermore I decided upon an ‘artic white’ mount, rather than a cream-white mount, this provides the photographic series with a clean, crisp finish as well as adding an additional layer to the image encounter, drawing people into view the photograph.

The photographs will be mounted and ready for collection on Thursday … and I cannot wait !

Framing Sampling

I decided to utilise Adobe Express ipad app, to gain an insight, or sampling of the different frames and how they would appear on my selected photographs… below are some sample frame ideas.

After much reflection, I have decided that a black frame (as seen below) with white mounts suit the photographs collectively… I am due to visit the framers tomorrow, to drop the A2 images off, I will see what options the framers offer at this moment I am intent on using black frames…

Vistaprint Business Cards

I opted to create my own business cards, for the sole purpose of showing my online portfolio. I selected a 250 pack of folded business cards; although this is not a high-quality preview, vistaprint do not provide a high quality sample in case customers decide to print at home, which would take business away from vistaprint…

I feel this design and layout is effective as it is eyecatching, informative and supports the work which I shall exhibit on the wall.

Now I am awaiting the arrival of these cards, they shall be delivered during this upcoming week.

Vistaprint Business Cards – Sample Pack.

I received the Vistaprint business cards sample pack today; it is great to view the different sorts of business cards that this company creates; especially to consider when creating my business cards as well as for future circumstances where I may want to update my design.

Business Cards

From visiting the opening night of last year’s Novus Exhibition, I saw that many of the student photographers had utilised business cards…I felt this was a professional, appropriate approach which would link people to my photography portfolio.

I decided to have a look at Moo business cards initially and ordered a sample pack which I have received – They have such a wide variety to choose from e.g. Square format was a unique layout, different from the standard rectangular cards.
